Figures in this triptych refer to Hydra or Lernaean Hydra, a
many headed monster in Greek mythology. Killing the Hydra proved to be
quite a challenge, as more heads would grow back whenever one was cut
off. Here, Moe Szyslak,
proprietor of Moe’s Tavern, keeps his hunched over posture even though
he is nailed to the cross. Caught in the crossfire between Rainier
Wolfcastle (panel
one) and Lunchlady Doris (panel three), Moe has no visible bullet
wounds, only stream of blood. Cavalieri intentional makes
Moe larger than Rainier and Doris, to mimic medieval images of Jesus,
who was painted larger then the common
townspeople because of his biblical importance.
Cavalieri is representing UrbanGlass at SOFA Chicago this November 5-7, 2010, where this panel will have it public debut.
